Short answer: A Facebook Ads traffic campaign sends people to a destination such as your website, WhatsApp or Instagram profile. In Ads Manager choose the Traffic objective, pick the destination, select landing page views as the performance goal if your Meta Pixel is installed, set budget, audience and placements, add a clear ad with a strong reason to click, and track what visitors do next. Use a Leads or Sales objective instead when your real goal is enquiries or purchases.
A Facebook Ads traffic campaign is often the first campaign beginners run, and also the most misunderstood. Traffic campaigns are excellent at bringing visitors cheaply. They are not designed to bring leads. Knowing that difference saves a lot of budget.
If you are new to Meta, read our Facebook Ads guide first.
When Should You Use a Traffic Campaign?
- To bring visitors to a new blog post, guide or resource.
- To build a remarketing audience of website visitors for later lead campaigns.
- To promote content when the website has no conversion tracking yet.
- To drive people to WhatsApp or Messenger conversations in some setups.
If you want form leads, calls or purchases, use the Leads or Sales objective. Meta then looks for people likely to take that action, not just people likely to click.
Step 1: Install the Meta Pixel
Before you start, install the Meta Pixel on your website. It lets you optimise for landing page views instead of raw clicks and builds remarketing audiences. You can install it through a plugin, your website settings, or through Google Tag Manager as explained in our Google Tag Manager tutorial.
Step 2: Create the Campaign
- In Meta Ads Manager, click Create and choose the Traffic objective.
- Name the campaign clearly, for example “Traffic – Blog – SEO Guide – Oct”.
- Decide whether to use Advantage campaign budget or ad set budgets.
For setup help, see our Meta Ads Manager setup guide.
Step 3: Choose the Destination and Performance Goal
| Performance goal | What Meta optimises for | Use when |
|---|---|---|
| Maximise landing page views | People who click and wait for the page to load | Pixel installed; you want real visitors |
| Maximise link clicks | People likely to click | No pixel, or the destination is not a website |
Landing page views usually bring better visitors, because accidental clicks that bounce before the page loads are not counted.
Step 4: Set the Budget and Schedule
Choose a daily budget for ongoing promotion or a lifetime budget for a fixed period. Our guide to daily budget vs lifetime budget explains the difference.
Step 5: Define the Audience
- Set the location carefully, for example Faridabad and nearby areas, not all of India.
- Choose age ranges that match your real customers.
- Add a few relevant interests, or let Advantage+ audience expand from your suggestions.
- Exclude people who already converted, if you have that audience.
Step 6: Choose Placements
Advantage+ placements let Meta show ads across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and the Audience Network where results are cheapest. For traffic campaigns, watch placement results closely, because some placements can bring many low-quality clicks. Exclude placements that bring visitors who leave immediately.
Step 7: Create the Ad
- Use a vertical image or short video that works on phones.
- Give a specific reason to click: “Read the free 10-step guide” beats “Visit our website”.
- Match the ad message to the page people land on.
- Use the Learn more or Read more button for content.
Step 8: Measure What Happens After the Click
Clicks are only the start. In Google Analytics and Meta, check how long visitors stay, how many pages they view and whether they take any useful action. Use the visitors you bring as a remarketing audience for a later Leads campaign. If ads underperform, check the ad relevance diagnostics.
Common Traffic Campaign Mistakes
- Running traffic campaigns when the goal is leads.
- Optimising for link clicks when the pixel is installed and landing page views are available.
- Sending visitors to a slow page that never loads on mobile data.
- Broad targeting with a very low budget, bringing cheap but irrelevant clicks.
- Never using the visitors for remarketing.
