What is Base64?
Base64 is a way of writing any data, including images and text in any language, using only 64 plain characters: letters, numbers, plus and slash. It is used to send data through systems that only handle simple text, such as email attachments, data URIs in HTML and many APIs. Base64 is not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide passwords or private data.
Where you might see it
| Place | Example |
|---|---|
| Images inside HTML or CSS | data:image/png;base64,iVBOR... |
| Email attachments | Encoded file content in the raw email |
| API keys and tokens | Basic authentication headers |
| Tracking and ad links | Encoded parameters in long URLs |
Data URIs and page speed
A small icon as a data URI saves one request, but Base64 is about a third larger than the original file and cannot be cached separately. For photos and large graphics, upload a normal compressed image instead. Our image compressor and WebP converter help keep images light.

Is this Base64 tool free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and your text and images are processed in your browser.
Does it support Hindi and emojis?
Yes. Text is encoded as UTF-8 first, so Hindi, Hinglish and emojis encode and decode correctly.
Is Base64 safe for passwords?
No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it in seconds.
What is URL-safe Base64?
It replaces + and / with – and _ and drops the = padding, so the result can be used in URLs and file names without extra encoding.
