HTTP Status Codes List with SEO Impact
Search any HTTP status code to see what it means in plain English and how it affects SEO, from 200 OK to 301 redirects, 404 errors and 503 maintenance.
How to use this list
- Type a code like 301 or a word like redirect or error.
- Read the meaning and the SEO impact.
- Check your own pages in Google Search Console under Pages and Crawl stats.
The status code groups
| Range | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 2xx | Success |
| 3xx | Redirection |
| 4xx | Client error, like a missing page |
| 5xx | Server error |
The codes that matter most for SEO
- 200 for every live page you want indexed.
- 301 when a page moves permanently.
- 404 or 410 when a page is gone. Not every 404 is a problem; fix the ones with links or traffic.
- 503 during planned maintenance, never a 200 maintenance page.
Create redirects with the htaccess redirect generator, design a helpful error page with the 404 page generator, and find chains with the redirect chain checker.

Is this HTTP status code list free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up and works in your browser.
What is the difference between 404 and 410?
Both mean the page is not there. 410 says it is gone on purpose, and search engines may remove it a little faster.
Do 404 errors hurt my SEO?
Not by themselves. They are normal for removed pages. Fix broken internal links and redirect pages that had links or traffic.
What is a soft 404?
A page that returns 200 OK but looks empty or like an error. Google treats it as not found.
