Free Bounce Rate and Engagement Rate Calculator
Calculate bounce rate the way GA4 does, from sessions and engaged sessions, or the older way from single-page sessions. Then see what the number really tells you about a page.
How to use the bounce rate calculator
- Choose the GA4 method if you use Google Analytics 4. Enter sessions and engaged sessions from the Reports section.
- Or use the single-page method for other tools that report single-page sessions.
- Read bounce and engagement rates and the notes on what they mean.
How GA4 defines bounce rate
In GA4, bounce rate is the opposite of engagement rate. A session counts as engaged if the visitor stays at least 10 seconds, triggers a key event such as a form submit, or views at least two pages. Bounce rate is the percentage of sessions that were not engaged. This is different from old Universal Analytics, where any single-page visit counted as a bounce, even a long one.
Is a high bounce rate bad?
| Page type | What bounces mean |
|---|---|
| Contact page | Often fine. People find your number and call |
| Blog post | Can be fine if they read it, but add internal links to keep them going |
| Landing page for ads | Worth fixing. People are leaving without enquiring |
| Home page | Check that the main paths to courses or services are clear |
How to reduce bounces on important pages
- Make sure the ad or search result matches what the page offers.
- Speed up the page, especially on mobile data.
- Put the main offer and a clear button in the first screen.
- Add a WhatsApp button and links to the next useful page.
Then measure the result with the conversion rate calculator, and track AI and other traffic sources with our guide to tracking AI traffic in GA4.

Is this bounce rate calculator free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up, and your numbers stay in your browser.
How is bounce rate calculated in GA4?
Bounce rate equals 100% minus engagement rate. Engagement rate is engaged sessions divided by total sessions.
What is a good bounce rate?
It depends on the page. A contact page can have a high bounce rate and still work well. Compare similar pages and watch the trend.
Does bounce rate affect SEO?
Google has said it does not use GA bounce rate as a ranking factor. A page that does not satisfy visitors can still lose out, so improve pages for users, not the metric.
