Free Word Counter and Character Counter
Count words, characters, sentences and paragraphs as you type, and see your reading and speaking time. It also checks your text against common limits like Google titles, meta descriptions, Instagram captions and tweets.
How to use the word counter
- Type or paste your text into the box. Counts update as you type.
- Read the totals for words, characters, sentences and paragraphs.
- Check the limits table to see if the text fits a Google title, a meta description, an X post or an Instagram caption.
- Use reading and speaking time to plan blog posts, presentations and video scripts.
Why word and character counts matter
Almost every platform has a limit. Google cuts long titles, X stops you at 280 characters, Google Ads headlines allow only 30, and SMS messages split after 160. Students also work to word limits for assignments and applications. Knowing the count before you publish saves time and avoids awkward cuts.
For SEO, word count is not a ranking factor on its own. A short page that answers the question clearly can beat a long one. Use the count as a guide for depth, not a target.
Common limits at a glance
| Where | Limit |
|---|---|
| Google title | About 60 characters or 600 pixels |
| Meta description | About 120 to 160 characters |
| X post | 280 characters |
| Google Ads headline and description | 30 and 90 characters |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 characters |
| YouTube title | 100 characters |
For titles, pixel width matters more than characters. Check them in our SERP preview tool.
