Percentage formulas
| Question | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| X% of Y | X / 100 x Y | 18% of 25,000 = 4,500 |
| X is what % of Y | X / Y x 100 | 45 of 60 = 75% |
| % change | (New - old) / old x 100 | 1,200 to 1,500 = 25% increase |
| Add X% | Y x (1 + X / 100) | 999 + 10% = 1,098.9 |
| Remove X% | Y x (1 - X / 100) | 999 - 10% = 899.1 |
Percentages in marketing
- Growth: use % change to report month-on-month traffic, leads or followers.
- Discounts: use Remove % to set sale prices.
- Rates: use “X is what % of Y” for click-through and conversion rates.
- Taxes: for GST, use the dedicated GST calculator, because removing GST from an inclusive price is not the same as subtracting 18%.
A common mistake
A 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease does not bring you back to the start. 100 up 50% is 150, and 150 down 50% is 75. Percentage changes are always measured from the starting value, which is why the change tab asks for the old value first.
