Percentages in marketing

  • Growth: use % change to report month-on-month traffic, leads or followers.
  • Discounts: use Remove % to set sale prices.
  • Rates: use “X is what % of Y” for click-through and conversion rates.
  • Taxes: for GST, use the dedicated GST calculator, because removing GST from an inclusive price is not the same as subtracting 18%.

A common mistake

A 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease does not bring you back to the start. 100 up 50% is 150, and 150 down 50% is 75. Percentage changes are always measured from the starting value, which is why the change tab asks for the old value first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this percentage calculator free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up and works in your browser.

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. For example, 18% of 25,000 is 0.18 x 25,000 = 4,500.

How do I calculate percentage increase?

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100.

How do I remove 18% GST from a price?

Divide the price by 1.18 rather than subtracting 18%. The GST calculator does this for you.
