What a good description includes
| Part | Why |
|---|---|
| First two lines with the keyword | They show in search and above "more" |
| Chapters | Help viewers jump ahead and can show in Google |
| Links | Send viewers to your site, course or tools |
| Call to action | Ask for a like, subscribe or comment |
| Hashtags | The first three can show above the title |
Chapter rules
YouTube creates chapters automatically from timestamps in your description when the first one is 0:00, there are at least three, and each chapter is at least 10 seconds long. Write them as 0:00 Intro, one per line. Build them quickly with the YouTube chapters generator.
Tips
- Write for people first. Stuffing keywords looks spammy and can break YouTube’s policies.
- Tag links with the UTM link builder to see YouTube traffic in GA4.
- Pair the description with a strong title from the YouTube title generator.

Is this YouTube description generator free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up and works in your browser.
How long can a YouTube description be?
Up to 5,000 characters. The first 100 to 150 characters matter most because they show before more.
Do hashtags in the description help?
The first few hashtags can appear above your title and link to related videos. Use a few relevant ones, not dozens.
Should I add timestamps?
Yes, for videos longer than a few minutes. Chapters help viewers navigate and can appear in Google search results.
